Checkpoints let you undo the changes the agent made to files. Before a response changes a file for the first time, the file's current state is saved; when you undo a response, the files go back to how they were before it.
Chat
Response 1
report.md · edited
Previous state saved
Response 2
summary.docx · created
New file; removed when undone
Response 3
table.xlsx · updated
Previous state saved
Folder
- report.mdAs of response 1
- summary.docxCreated in response 2
- table.xlsxAs of response 3
Changes made by terminal commands aren't covered by checkpoints.
How it works
- Before a response changes a file for the first time, the file's current state is saved.
- Undoing a response restores the file changes of that response and every later response, starting with the newest.
- Newly created files and folders are undone as well.
- Only changes made by file tools are covered. Changes made by terminal commands are not covered; the chat points this out.
In the example, three responses edit report.md, create summary.docx, and update table.xlsx, in that order. Undoing the second response restores the third response's change first, then the second's: table.xlsx goes back to its old state and summary.docx is removed. The first response's edit to report.md is kept.
What can be undone?
| Change | Undone? |
|---|---|
Edits made with file tools (write_file, edit_file, create_document) | Yes |
Files deleted with file tools (delete_file) | Yes |
| Newly created files and folders | Yes, they are removed |
Changes made by terminal commands (run_command, terminal) | No; the chat points this out |
| Changes in an incognito chat | No; no checkpoints are kept in an incognito chat |
Storage
- Checkpoints are kept in the related chat's folder and are deleted together with the chat.
- If there are changes you may want to undo, review them before you delete the chat.
Tip
Before work that will make large changes through the terminal, making a git commit helps you go back even for changes checkpoints don't cover (see Git and GitHub).
Frequently asked questions
- Does undoing bring my files fully back? Only the files changed by file tools go back to how they were before the change. Changes made by terminal commands aren't covered.
- How long are checkpoints kept? As long as the chat exists. When the chat is deleted, its checkpoints are deleted too.
- Can undo go back to the first response? Yes. Whichever response you undo, the file changes of that response and every later one are restored, starting with the newest.
