For large or risky work, you may want to see what will be done first. Plan mode lets the agent review without changing anything; the to-do list makes the progress of multi-step work visible.
Plan mode
In plan mode, the agent changes nothing; it only reads, reviews, and proposes a roadmap. You can review and adjust the plan, and ask the agent to carry it out when you're ready.
| Plan mode | Normal work | |
|---|---|---|
| Reading and reviewing files | Yes | Yes |
| Creating, changing, deleting files | No | Yes, depending on the approval mode |
| Running commands | No | Yes, depending on the approval mode |
| Result | A roadmap | Finished work |
The to-do list
- For multi-step work, the agent keeps a to-do list with the
update_todostool. - Progress appears in the step counter next to the chat title (for example 2/4).
- The list updates as steps are completed, so you always see where the work stands.
Asking for a good plan
- State the goal and the expected output: “Make a plan to update the report with the Q3 data.”
- Set limits: files not to touch and the sources to use.
- If you want to approve the plan step by step, choose Ask for approval when you move on to carrying it out.
An example roadmap
In plan mode, when you say “Make a plan to update the report with the Q3 data,” the agent reviews the files and, without changing anything, proposes a roadmap like this:
text
1. Review growth-report.md and q3-data.xlsx2. Update the revenue and active user tables with the new data3. Remove the two outdated paragraphs4. Prepare the leadership summary as Q3-leadership-summary.docxFrequently asked questions
- Does plan mode use credits? Yes. The agent reads and reviews files, so its model steps use credits (see Credits).
- Can I change the plan? Yes. Ask for changes in the chat, and ask the agent to carry it out when you're ready.
- Do I create the to-do list? No. For multi-step work, the agent keeps and updates the list itself.
