MORATUS

MORATUS Desktop

Desktop's biggest difference is that the agent can work directly in a folder on your computer. Before it works in a folder, you confirm that you trust it; trust is the gate that decides whether the agent can work in that folder and which files it reads.

launch-reportThe agent can work in this folder
  • .moratus/Workspace record
  • .agent-moratus/Agent notes · ignored by git
  • AGENTS.mdProject rules · up to 8,000 characters read
  • data/
  • report.docx

Connecting a folder

  1. Choose a folder from the folder menu above the composer, or create a new project.
  2. The first time you connect, a trust dialog opens. The agent does not work in a folder you have not approved.
  3. In an approved folder, .moratus (workspace record) and .agent-moratus (agent notes) folders are created. The notes are ignored by git.
  4. The agent records the work it has done and the open steps under .agent-moratus; the next chat picks up where it left off.

Trusted and untrusted folders

Trusted folderUntrusted folder
Does the agent work?YesNo
.moratus and .agent-moratusCreatedNot created
AGENTS.md / CLAUDE.mdRead as project rules (up to 8,000 characters)Not read
Agent notesRead and updatedNot read
A .moratus that came inside the folder—Doesn't count as trust

The trust decision is kept in the app's own settings. That's why a .moratus folder inside a folder you copied or downloaded from somewhere else doesn't make that folder trusted.

Project rules: AGENTS.md

In a trusted folder, the AGENTS.md file (or CLAUDE.md if it is missing) is read as the rules the agent follows in that folder. Up to 8,000 characters of the file are read; keep the rules short and clear.

markdown
# Project rules - Reports are written in a formal tone.- Files in the `data/` folder are not changed.- Run `npm test` after every change.- New documents are saved to the `outputs/` folder.
  • Instructions written for the project in the app are also passed to the agent; both apply together (see Project components).
  • Rule files in untrusted folders are not read.

Agent notes: .agent-moratus

  • The agent records the work it has done and the open steps under .agent-moratus; the next chat picks up where it left off.
  • The notes are ignored by git, so they stay out of your repository.

Releasing a folder

Use the cross on the folder icon to release the selected folder and continue without one. Files generated in chats without a folder are saved under Documents\Moratus.

Tip

In a folder you're working in for the first time, use Ask for approval; approving each step lets you follow what the agent does in the folder (see Approval modes).

Frequently asked questions

  • What if the folder has no `AGENTS.md`? The agent works without a rule file; if there is a CLAUDE.md, that is read. Instructions you wrote for the project in the app are passed on either way.
  • What happens if I choose a folder I don't trust? The agent doesn't work in it, and its rule and note files aren't read.
  • What happens if I delete the `.agent-moratus` folder? The agent's notes for that folder are lost, so the next chat can't recall earlier work from them.
  • Can I work without a folder? Yes. Files generated in chats without a folder are saved under Documents\Moratus.
