Projects
You manage your projects from the Projects page and the Projects list in the sidebar. This section covers finding and editing projects, keeping their chats in order, deleting them, and how projects work across devices.
Finding and sorting projects
- On the Projects page, find a project by name with Search projects.
- Sort the list by name or creation date.
- You can also search with Search projects in the Choose project menu on the new chat screen (see Creating a project).
Pinning
Pin the projects you use often to keep them at the top of the list. You can unpin a project at any time; the project and its content are not affected.
Editing a project
| What you change | Where | Result |
|---|---|---|
| Project name | The project's options | The new name shows in the sidebar and the Choose project menu. |
| Instructions | Instructions on the project page | The new rules apply to the next responses in the project. |
| Files | Files on the project page | Every chat in the project sees the files you add; files you delete can no longer be used in chats. |
| Connectors and skills | By adding them to or removing them from the project | They are used in, or no longer used in, every chat in the project. |
| Project notes | Review project notes | Refresh refreshes the notes; Delete removes them, and the notes build up again with later chats (see Project notes). |
Managing a project's chats
- You can search and sort the chats inside a project.
- Add a chat from outside the project with Move to project, from the chat's options or the History page; the moved chat shows in the project's chat list.
- You can select several chats and delete them together.
- Incognito chats are not saved to projects, and incognito chat can't be used in project mode (see Incognito chat).
Deleting a project
Deleting a project also deletes the chats inside it. If there are chats you want to keep, move them to another project before you delete it.
Tip
If you'll continue the same work in a new project, copy the project instructions before you delete it; once you add them to the new project, its chats start with the same rules.
Storage
- Project files use your account's storage.
- When your storage is full, you are asked to free up space by deleting unused files.
- Uploaded and generated files are kept in private storage and open through signed, time-limited links.
Projects across devices
| Platform | How projects work |
|---|---|
| Web | Projects, instructions, files, and project notes are kept in your account. |
| Desktop | Projects and preferences stay in sync with your account; chat history is stored on your computer (see Where your data lives). A folder can also be connected as a project (see Working with folders and trust). |
| Mobile | Projects work with the same account data as Web. |
Keeping projects organized
- Open a separate project for each piece of work or client; don't mix unrelated work in one project.
- Keep project names short and distinctive so they're quick to find in the Choose project menu.
- Unpin the projects of finished work so active projects stay at the top of the list.
- Update the instructions as the work changes; outdated rules can steer new chats the wrong way.
